The Fine Arts Showcase is the assumed name of singer/songwriter Gustaf Kjellvander. From Malmö Sweden, Gustaf spent his first 10 years living in the Seattle area, and currently resides mainly in London. Gustaf, although only in his mid-twenties, has been on the music scene for some time. Fronting noisy outsider pop trio Sideshow Bob, playing with the more mellow Songs of Soil and delivering the Phil Spectoresque noise and songfest of The Fine Arts Showcase debut album (“Gustaf Kjellvander Proudly Presents the Fine Arts Showcase and the Electric Pavilion”). The Fine Arts Showcase now returns with their strongest album to date, “Radiola”, which showcases Gustaf Kjellvander at his absolute finest. Strong melodies, powerful songs, catchy hooks and a constant sense of hope, desire and longing. The Fine Arts Showcase sound is made up of a lot of different fragments. It blends the pop sensibilities of bands like The Byrds, Television Personalities, The Jesus and Mary Chain and artist Gene Pitney with the songwriting and autobiographical elements of Merle Haggard, Leonard Cohen and John Lennon and the overall poetry of bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and The Silver Jews. Surrounded with melody and variation, “Radiola” soars. Built like a mix-tape, Gustaf has chosen to incorporate the sacral sounds of Songs of Soil, the raw emotion of Sideshow Bob and the experimentation and instrumentation of The Fine Arts Showcase debut from 2004 as well as exploring ground which for him was previously uncharted. The album was recorded by the amazingly talented Mathias Oldén (from the band Logh) during several sessions and months in early 2005 and mixed in October 2005 by Mathias Oldén and Pelle Gunnerfeldt (of Fireside). Gustaf´s charismatic and friendly voice is backed by new members to The Fine Arts Showcase family, such as drummers and programmers Benjamin Singer, Stefan Rausfeltd, and Patrik Skoog, string players Hanna Sundén and Tomas Ebrelius as well as familiar faces such as pianist/multiinstrumentalist Dan Englund. As always Gustaf plays a whole array of strange and beautiful instruments alongside the more traditional guitar/bass and vocals pop skeleton. This is music striving for something better, hoping to break the code, jump off the CD and to live a life of its own. Gustaf, obwohl gerade mal Mitte zwanzig, ist schon eine Weile dabei, sei es als Frontmann des noisigen Außenseiter Pop Trios Sideshow Bob oder als Teil der etwas lieblicheren Songs Of Soil. Oder eben als Fine Arts Showcase, unter jenem Namen er bereits ein Album veröffentlichte (Gustaf Kjellvander Proudly Presents the Fine Arts Showcase and the Electric Pavilion). Nun sind The Fine Arts Showcase also zurück mit ihrem bisher wohl stärksten Album, was Gustaf Kjellvander von seiner besten Seite zeigt. Starke Melodien, kräftige Songs, eingängige Hooks. Der Sinn für Hoffnung, Sehnsucht und Verlangen durchzieht es wie ein roter Faden. Der Sound von The Fine Arts Showcase setzt sich zusammen aus vielen kleinen Einzelteilen. Es vermengt das Pop Gespür von Bands wie The Byrds, Television Personalities, The Jesus and Mary Chain und Künstler Gene Pitney mit den Songwriting- und autobiographischen Elementen eines Merle Haggard, Leonard Cohen und John Lennon und der Poesie von Bands wie Neutral Milk Hotel und The Silver Jews insgesamt. Umgeben von Melodie und Variation erhebt sich Radiola feierlich. Aufgebaut wie ein Mixtape hat sich Gustaf dazu entschieden, die sakralen Sounds von Songs of Soil ebenso einfließen zu lassen, wie die raue Emotion von Sideshow Bob sowie die Experimentierfreude und Instrumentation von Fine Arts Showcase. Ganz zu schweigen von bisher unergründetem Boden, den es erst noch galt zu entdecken. Das Album wurde aufgenommen von Mathias Oldén (von der Band Logh) während mehrerer Sessions und Monate zu Beginn des vergangenen Jahres. Abgemischt wurde es im Oktober 2005 von Mathias Oldén und Pelle Gunnerfeldt (von Fireside). Gustafs charismatische und freundliche Stimme wird gestützt von neuen Mitglieder in der The Fine Arts Showcase Familie wie den Schlagzeugern und Programmierern Benjamin Singer, Stefan Rausfeltd und Patrik Skoog, den Streichern Hanna Sundén und Tomas Ebrelius sowie bekannteren Gesichtern, Pianist/Multiinstrumentalist Dan Englund zum Beispiel. Wie gewöhnlich spielt Gustaf auch hier wieder ein ganzes Aufgebot an seltsamen und schönen Instrumenten, Seite an Seite mit Gitarre, Bass und Gesang, die den Grundstock bilden. Hierbei handelt es sich um Musik, die nach etwas besserem strebt, darauf hofft den Code zu brechen und ein eigenes Leben zu führen. |
