THE WEDDING PRESENT

Having called a temporary halt to The Wedding Present in 1997, David Gedge embarked on a duo project with his then girlfriend Sally Murrell that was soon to adopt the name Cinerama, releasing their debut album, VA VA VOOM, in 1998. Cinerama was to become the primary creative output for David Gedge’s writing, recording and performing, but, by 2002’s TORINO, the melodic Cinerama sound was becoming darker in tone and, stylistically, more guitar driven. They had also taken to mixing the odd Wedding Present song into the live shows. Gedge’s personal life then entered a darker place itself following the break up with long time girlfriend Sally. He moved to Seattle and began writing a series of songs that were clearly influenced by his despair over the split. The resultant album, which was recorded in Chicago and Seattle by Steve Fisk [who also produced WATUSI, The Wedding Present’s 1994 LP for Island Records] was released in mid-February 2005, and saw Gedge revive The Wedding Present name for the first album since 1996’s SATURNALIA. Titled TAKE FOUNTAIN, it was preceded in the UK by a single, INTERSTATE 5.

After almost an eight-year hiatus, The Wedding Present followed the album release with a tour through the UK, Europe and North America. The band's live line up consisted of David Gedge, Terry de Castro (bass), Kari Paavola (drums) and guitarist Simon Cleave, a member of the previous Wedding Present line up. For Gedge it was full circle, almost 20 years since he started out with The Wedding Present, a band which has remained true to itself albeit without ever taking or acknowledging the full credit and recognition it deserves as one of the UK’s most influential and successful indie pop bands for a decade onwards from the mid-eighties. TAKE FOUNTAIN is a body of songs so heartfelt it’s impossible not to be moved by them and an album that is the equal, if not surpassing, anything The Wedding Present has previously recorded and released.

A little over a year after the release of Take Fountain, and in finest Wedding Present tradition, a singles / rarities / video collection was released on CD/DVD. Titled "Search for Paradise: Singles 2004-5", it contains not only the UK single releases from Take Fountain (which weren't released outside of the UK), but also b-sides, acoustic versions, remixes, promotional videos, and behind the scene video material.

1997 legte David Gedge bei seiner Band The Wedding Present eine Schaffenspause ein und gründete statt dessen mit seiner damaligen Freundin Sally Murrell das Duo Cinerama, die auch gleich im darauffolgenden Jahr ihr Debüt „VA VA VOOM“ veröffentlichten. Für David Gedge entwickelte sich die Band dann auch zum Hauptventil für sein musikalisches und kreatives Treiben. Mit dem 2002 erschienenen Album „Torino“ änderte sich der Sound von Cinerama und die Lieder wurden gitarrenlastiger und dunkler; live spielten sie nun auch einige alte Lieder von The Wedding Present.

Jedoch wurde bald darauf auch Gedges Privatleben dunkler, als er sich von seiner langjährigen Freundin Sally trennte. Er zog darauf nach Seattle und schrieb Lieder, die klar von seiner Verzweiflung angesichts dieser großen Veränderung geprägt waren. Das daraus resultierende Album wurde von Steve Fisk (der auch das auf Island Record erschienene „Watusi“ produziert hatte) in Chicago und Seattle aufgenommen. „Take Fountain“ wurde im Februar 2005 veröffentlicht und belebte den Namen The Wedding Present auf ein neues. In den UK erschien noch vor der Veröffentlichung die Single „Interstate 5“.

Nach einer fast achtjährigen Pause ging David Gedge mit The Wedding Present wieder auf Tour und reiste durch England, Europa und Nordamerika. Das Line Up bestand aus Terry de Castro (bass), Kari Paavola (drums), Gitarrist Simon Cleave, der auch schon früher Mitglied von The Wedding Present war, und natürlich aus David Gedge selbst.

20 Jahre nach der Gründung ist sich The Wedding Present immer noch selber treu, auch ungeachtet dessen, daß sie nie die Bestätigung oder Anerkennung erhielten, die sie als eine der beeinflußendsten und erfolgreichsten englischen Indie-Pop Bands verdient hätten.

„Take Fountain“ ist ein Album voller tiefer Songs und noch größer als alles andere, was The Wedding Present zuvor aufgenommen und veröffentlicht haben, so daß es mehr oder weniger unmöglich ist, sich nicht von diesem Album berühren zu lassen.

Etwas über ein Jahr nach der Veröffentlichung von Take Fountain, wurde in bester Wedding Present Tradition eine Single/Raritäten/Video-Kollektion, mit dem Namen „Search For Paradise: Singles 2004-5“, auf CD/DVD veröffentlicht. Sie enthält nicht nur die UK Single-Veröffentlichungen von Take Fountain (welche nicht außerhalb UKs veröffentlicht wurden), sondern auch B-Seiten, Akustik-Versionen, Remixe, Promovideos und Videomaterial, aufgenommen hinter den Kulissen.
