The Soundtrack of Our Lives was formed in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1994 and sprang from the ashes of one of Sweden's most important bands of all time, Union Carbide Productions. After breaking up in 1993 (having existed for 7 years), ex-UCP members Ebbot Lundberg, Björn Olsson and Ian Person still found themselves drawn to each other musically. The chemistry was still there, and they started sending each other demo tapes of what they were up to at the time. After working on material for awhile and forming the sound of TSOOL, a wisened and grown-up version of UCP, they were joined by bass player Kalle Gustafsson, drummer Fredrick Sandsten and Martin Hederos on keyboards. After playing a debut gig at the Nefertiti club in Gothenburg, and toying with the band names "Jehovah Sunrise" and "Nobody Never", they stole a line of lyrics from the song Firmament Vacation and The Soundtrack of Our Lives was born. A name that the band itself agrees as being confident, original, powerful...and cocky. With this cockiness and alot of bad experience with the music industry from the UCP days to back them up, the band went out to conquer the world. And conquer the world they did! After releasing a vinyl-only limited edition 7", Four Ages, on Dolores Records, now a collectors item, the band was quickly snapped up by Telegram / Warner Music. In the spring of 1996 they released a five track CD EP, Homo Habilis Blues, that took their home country by storm. Their debut album "Welcome to the Infant Freebase" hit the stores that autumn and was lavished with praise, eventually winning the band the 1996 Newcomer of the Year Award at the Grammis Awards, the swedish equivalent to the Grammy. But 1997 started out shaky for the band. Björn Olsson quit, feeling that he had done all that he could do with TSOOL. He had completed his vision, so to speak. His replacement was finally found in Mattias Bärjed, a former guitarist with Nymphet Noodlers who the band felt from the first instant to fit in perfectly. Their second album, "Extended Revelation", was then released in 1998 and is a more mellow and laid back album than their debut. 1998 and 1999 found them on the road alot, both touring in the UK and Europe supporting Hurricane no 1 and The Cardigans. They played the Glastonbury festival in England, where singer Ebbot got his foot stuck in the mud and managed to break a leg. And they even managed to fulfill one of their dreams and supported The Rolling Stones in Sweden! With their third album, "Behind the Music", the band started receiving much more international attention for the band than ever before. It also shows the band from a more hard-hitting and groovier side, and finds them at the height of their playing ability. They supported Oasis, and spent much of their time in the U.S. where they even appeared on the Jay Leno show. The fourth album, "Origin Vol. 1", picks up where "Behind the Music" left off. Not even half the songs from their recording sessions were used for the album, so an "Origin Vol. 2" can also be expected one of these days. And meanwhile the band continues to gain more and more fans. Currently the band seems to be on an endless tour, playing throughout Europe, the US, Australia and Asia. Stickman Records entered the picture in 1999. As big fans of TSOOL and vinyl addicts to boot, we were frustrated by the fact that you could not find the TSOOL albums on LP. After getting no response regarding the vinyl rights for this amazing band, we called around, got the address of singer Ebbot and sent him a package of Motorpsycho vinyl. He called a week or two later saying "we want you to release our stuff on vinyl!" and got the ball rolling. All four albums are now available on Stickman Records and we hope to continue fulfilling TSOOL's vinyl needs for a long time to come! Updated on August 25, 2005. Deutsche Version: The Soundtrack of Our Lives gründeten sich in Göteborg, Schweden im Jahre 1994. Sie entstanden aus einer der wichtigsten schwedischen Bands namens Union Carbide Productions, die sich nach sieben Jahren 1993 trennten. Die Ex-Mitglieder Ebbot Lundberg, Björn Olsson und Ian Person fühlten sich jedoch immer noch musikalisch voneinander angezogen, so daß sie sich gegenseitig Demos zuschickten, um jeweils zu schauen, was der andere so macht. Nachdem sie eine Zeit lang an neuem Material arbeiteten und sich der Sound von TSOOL langsam formte, eine weisere und erwachsenere Version von Union Carbide Productions, bekamen sie Gesellschaft von Kalle Gustafsson, der von nun an Bass spielen sollte, Fredrick Sandsten als Schlagzeuger und Martin Hederos am Keyboard. Nachdem sie ihren ersten Auftritt im Nefertiti Club in Göteborg hinter sich gebracht hatten und überlegten, wie es denn mit den Namen „Jehovah Sunrise“ oder „Nobody Never“ wäre, stahlen sie eine Textzeile aus dem Song Firmament Vacation und nannten sich „The Soundtrack of Our Lives“. Ein Name, den die Band selber als sehr selbstsicher, originell, schlagkräftig…und rotzfrech bezeichnet. Mit dieser Frechheit und jeder Menge schlechte Erfahrung mit der Musikindustrie, noch mit der Band UCP, im Rücken, zogen sie aus, um die Welt zu erobern. Und genau das taten sie auch! Nachdem sie eine limitierte, nur auf Vinyl erhältliche, 7’’ namens „Four Ages“ auf Dolores Records herausgebracht hatten (die mittlerweile zu einem Sammlerstück geworden ist), schnappte sich Telegram/Warner Music die Band. Im Frühling 1996 veröffentlichten sie eine EP mit fünf Liedern, „Homo Habilis Blues“, mit der sie auch gleich ihr Heimatland im Sturm erobern konnten. Ihr Debütalbum „Welcome to the Infant Freebase“ wurde noch im darauffolgenden Herbst veröffentlicht und mit Lob nur so überhäuft. Schließlich gewannen sie sogar als beste Newcomer-Band des Jahres 1996 den Grammis Award, das schwedische Äquivalent zum Grammy. 1997 begann jedoch heikel: Björn Olsson verließ die Band. Er hatte mit TSOOL alles erreicht, was er wollte. Er wurde durch den ehemaligen Gitarristen von Nymphet Noodlers ersetzt, der nach Meinung der Band vom ersten Moment an perfekt in die Band paßte. Ihr zweites Album „Extended Revelation“, welches etwas ruhiger und zurückhaltender ausgefallen war als das Vorgängeralbum, wurde 1998 veröffentlicht. Die Jahre darauf führten sie in das Vereinigte Königreich und nach Europa, wo sie auf der ersten Ausgabe des Hurricane-Festivals spielten und als Support von The Cardigans auftraten. Auf dem Glastonbury-Festival in England blieb Sänger Ebbot unglücklicherweise mit dem Fuß im Matsch hängen und brach sich das Bein. Aber nichtsdestotrotz konnten sie einen ihrer großen Träume wahr werden lassen: sie spielten in Schweden als Vorband der Rolling Stones. Das dritte Album „Behind the Music“ zeigte TSOOL wieder von ihrer etwas härteren und groovigeren Seite. Mit dieser Veröffentlichung stieg auch das internationale Interesse immer mehr, so daß sie den größten Teil ihrer Zeit mit Touren in den USA verbrachten. Sie waren nicht nur Supportact von Oasis, sondern auch Gast bei Jay Leno. „Origin Vol.1“, das vierte Album, setzt da an, wo „Behind the Music“ aufgehört hat. Noch nicht mal die Hälfte aller Songs, die zu „Origin Vol.1“ aufgenommen wurden, haben ihren Platz auf der Platte gefunden, so daß in der nächsten Zeit mit „Origin Vol.2“ gerechnet werden darf. Indessen gewinnt die Band immer mehr Fans. Zurzeit befinden sich TSOOL auf einer endlos scheinenden Tour durch Europa, die USA, Australien und Asien. Stickman Records trat 1999 in Erscheinung. Als große Fans von TSOOL und genauso große Vinylsüchtige, waren wir frustriert, daß man nirgendwo die Veröffentlichungen der Band auf Vinyl finden konnte. Nachdem niemand uns auf unsere Anfrage bezüglich der Vinylrechte antwortete, telefonierten wir herum, um die Adresse von Ebbot herauszufinden. Als wir sie hatten, schickten wir ihm ein Paket voll von Motorpsycho-Platten. Nach ein paar Wochen rief er an und sagte die erhofften Worte „we want you to release our stuff on vinyl!“. Alle vier Alben sind nun bei Stickman Records käuflich erwerblich und wir hoffen, daß wir auch in der Zukunft alle Vinylwünsche von TSOOL noch lange Zeit erfüllen können. |
